Effects of different intensity static magnetic fields on cells, mouse, and Arabidopsis’Callus

Prof. Peng Shang   (Director & Dean)

Key Laboratory for Space Bioscience & Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Northwestern Polytechnical University

The influence of static magnetic fields (SMFs) on biological systems has been studied. We present the bioeffects of different intensity of SMFs, including HMF (hypomagnetic field, 500nT), MSMF  (moderate static magnetic field, 0.2-0.4T), and HMSF  (high static magnetic field, 16T) on cells, mouse, and Arabidopsis’ callus.

Some new attempts to grow protein crystals

Prof. Dachuan Yin   (Vice-Dean)

Key Laboratory for Space Bioscience & Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Northwestern Polytechnical University

Protein crystallization is considered as a “bottleneck” for structural determination of protein by using X-ray crystallography. In the past decades, the methodology of protein crystallization has achieved big progresses. However, the problem still exists. In this talk I will give a report of our recent efforts in developing new methods for enhancing the success rate of protein crystallization. These methods include a cycling temperature strategy, a desiccant method, a method using a containerless and weightless condition, and a method using mechanical vibration.
